Application
Many pregnant women cannot initially imagine how much their birth canals widen during childbirth. Some women think they are "too tight" or that the child "would never fit through there". Perineum massages, however, make the perineal tissue soft and elastic. In addition, physical experiences such as feeling and feeling the birth space during the perineal massage can allay fears. The perineal massage helps ...:
- ... to make the perineal tissue more elastic
- ... consciously perceiving the perineal region
- ... preparing for the birth
If you want to prepare your perineum with a targeted perineal massage, there is not much to consider. From the 34th week of pregnancy you can use it to massage your perineum three to four times a week. Of course, your partner can also do the perineal massage. Just try what you feel most comfortable with. You should also make sure your fingernails are trimmed short and well cleaned when massaging yourself.
This is how you do the perineal massage:
- First spread a few drops of perineal massage oil on your perineum. Note that the oil is mostly for external use only. Internally you don't need any oil because your vagina is naturally moist.
- Then massage both sides next to and under the labia majora in small circular movements to slowly warm up the tissue.
- Now insert your thumb two to three centimeters into your vagina. Stretch the tissue that lies between your thumb and index finger.
- Then massage the perineum in small circular movements. Imagine a clock face: It is 6 o'clock at the bottom of the anus and 12 o'clock at the entrance to the vagina. Massage from 6 a.m. to 3 a.m. and from 6 a.m. to 9 a.m.
- Finally, use your thumb to gently stretch down toward 5 o'clock and 7 o'clock.
The massage should last about 5 to 10 minutes. Depending on the intensity of the perineal massage, you will feel light to strong pressure during use. This feeling is similar to the pain of stretching before the head comes out during childbirth. Over time you will find that you can let go more and more and that it becomes easier and easier for you to allow this pressure and stretching.
In the event of severe pain or bleeding, you should stop the massage immediately and seek medical advice.
